Geology GroupBACK TO: WHAT WE DO
|U3A Geology Groups
There are currently two U3A Geology groups who meet regularly once a month. The Friday group has been going strong for 8 years years and the Monday group for 7. Both groups have members from the Marple, the Marple Bridge and Romiley U3As.
In the summer we go out in the field; this year we have been out to Castleton again, a really rich locality with lots of different rocks and fossils to see.
During the winter we meet at Mary’s house and after a Power Point presentation we have coffee and biscuits and a close look at related rock specimens.
At the moment we are still exploring the geology of the British Isles, and currently (2013) have got as far as the Cretaceous.. only about 100 million years ago!
Next year we’ll revise some very basic geological ideas and then look further afield.
There are about 10 members in each group, but, since 2 or 3 are usually away on their holidays, there is room for new members in both groups.
Geology is essentially a practical subject and I try to make the sessions as much “hands on” as possible… I’ve got a garage full of rocks from all over!
